Treatment of the week: The Dibi facial

Treatment of the week: The Dibi facial

Holly at London's Home House is a rare breed: a skincare specialist who manages to make effective treatments enjoyable. When I first visited her, in March, my skin was tired, dull, a bit spotty and congested - generally not looking very good after a winter of flights and central heating.

Holly felt my face with her palms and concluded I had sensitive dehydrated skin that was prone to inflammation, before quietly setting about cleansing and steaming my face. What follows (the dreaded extractions) isn't pleasant,.

But it is effective and that's what counts. For the uninitiated, extractions are when a facialist expertly removes blackheads and clogged pores. It's a fairly necessary evil.

Calming masks and a facial massage followed (the treatment lasts 90 minutes) and afterwards Holly sat down with me and explained her recommendations.

For me, that meant the little-known Italian Dibi and Olos products, which aren't too expensive yet provide ' intelligent' care - moisturising, reducing shine where necessary and protecting from the effects of pollution.

Studies show that only 39% of the 500 products that were examined were safe and effective to use.

Hands-off melanoma test could complement natural skin care efforts

May 24, 2010 |11:03 | Skin Care  By : Team X

Hands-off melanoma test could complement natural skin care effortsPeople committed to a natural skin care regime are unlikely to welcome invasive tests for melanoma, should they suffer a skin cancer scare.

But non-invasive scanning methods have traditionally been relatively unreliable in diagnosing melanoma based on the surface appearance of the skin.

However, a new technique trialled by the University of the West of England has thrown new light on to the issue - from all directions.

The three-dimensional scanning device uses six lights to highlight differences in skin texture, which can then be analysed on a laptop.

The approach is broadly similar to the existing two-dimensional technique, which scans for asymmetry, borders, colour variation and diameter (ABCD) of suspected melanoma. However, unlike the ABCD technique, the three-dimensional alternative offers sensitivity of more than 90 per cent.
